In 1330 only about 5% of the population could read or write. Influence of Church gave rise to monasticism. Monks, priests and bishops took the responsibility of teaching and the whole educational pattern became purely religious. Bishops and monks started to educate pupils of upper class while education for serfs and their kids was a rare chance. Schools were run by monks.
