(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1) \text{ when the points } (x_1,y_1) \text{ and } (x_2,y_2) \text{ are on the line }.

Or you could line up the points vertically and subtract the points vertically, then put 2nd difference over 1st difference.

That looks like this:

( 2 , -12)

-( -5 , 9 )

----------------

7 -21

So the slope is -21/7 which gives you -3.
