The number of the squares of the second figure :

= (the number of the squares of the middle/horizontal row) + (the number of the remaining squares)

= (2×2−1) + 2×(1+2×0)

= 5

For n = 3 :

The number of the squares of the third figure :

= (the number of the squares of the middle/horizontal row) + (the number of the remaining squares)

= (2×3−1) + 2×[(1+2×0) + (1+2×1)]

= (5) + 2×[(1) + (3)]

= 5 + 2×[4]

= 5 + 8

For n = 4 :

The number of the squares of the fourth figure :
