The side of a triangle with 3 equal sides is 8 inches shorter than the side of a square. The perimeter of the square is 46 inches more than the perimeter of the triangle. Find the length of a side of the square.

Explanation:

Let each side of square be = s

Let each side of triangle be = s - 8

Perimeter of square, p₁ = 4s

Perimeter of triangle = p₂ = 3s

= 3(s-8)

= 3s - 24

Therefore, according to the question

p₁ - p₂ = 46

4s - (3s - 24) = 46

4s - 3s + 24 = 46

s = 46 - 24

s = 22

The length of a side of the square is 22 inches.
