a√2 / 2.

Explanation:

Using the Pythagoras Theorem;

a^2 = s^2 + s^2 where s is the length of each side of the square.

2s^2 = a^2

s^2 = a^2 / 2

s = √(a^2 / 2)

= a / √2

= a√2 / 2 .
