Let

x -----> the smaller number

y ----> the larger number

we know that

x+y=10

y=10-x -----> equation A

y=4x -----> equation B

Solve by substitution

substitute equation B in equation A and solve for x

4x=10-x

4x+x=10

5x=10

x=2

Find the value of y

y=4x-------> y=4(2)=8

therefore

The smaller number is 2 and the larger number is 8
