Not necessarily pivotal, but it would be just dumb not use every opportunity to
increase food security, food safety and healthiness, yield efficiency, ressource efficiency, farmers' safety and last but not least reduce carbon emissions.
I don't think that when they invented the Haber-Bosch process they debated about wether it was 'pivotal' in order to feed the world's population - although in hindsight, it absolutely was!
They just used it because everyone profited from it.
Today, we're in the same situation with biotechnology.
