Read the following dedication.
Mrs. Page was one of the founding board members of our
school. She has been involved in every major effort to
make the school successful. Now, as she prepares to
retire from her duties, we honor her for years of service
and leadership
Which of these rhetorical questions would best enhance the effectiveness of
this paragraph?

A. Who knows what life has in store for her next?

B. Is she even capable of suspending a student?

C. What must be going through her mind?

D. How can we possibly thank her enough?

A, since the dedication is talking about her retirement, most would wonder what she would be doing next. B and C are both unrelated, and quite rude for that matter, which would change the whole message of the dedication. I wouldn’t pick D, because for that one to be right, the dedication would talk more about everything she has done during her time teaching.

Answer:

D. How can we possibly thank her enough?

Step-by-step explanation:

Rhetorical question is a question that does not aim to obtain an answer, but rather to stimulate the reflection of the individual on a certain subject. The person who asks a rhetorical question already knows the answer to the question asked, in order to help the recipient of the question to reflect or understand a particular theme, subject or situation.

Regarding the above question, the rhetorical question that would improve the effectiveness of the paragraph above is the rhetorical question in letter D. This is because the author of the paragraph already knew that the best way to thank Mrs. Page for all her services and Dedication to the school's founding council is honoring Mrs. Page for all her years of service and leadership, but the author asks the rhetorical question "How can we possibly thank her enough?" to make the reader reflect on ways to thank Mr Page.
