Subject: Traffic Jams Near Blake High School

Dear Representative Lindstrom,

Thank you for your hard work on behalf of the citizens of our community. The purpose of this email is to bring to your attention issues related to traffic near Blake High School. As you may know, there are two main entrances to the high school: one off Main Street and one off Eames Way. Both of these become blocked at the beginning and end of the school day.

I did some research and found that there have been three accidents in the last month alone. Although these have all been minor collisions, they create major delays for students trying to get to school. Being late to school is a major bummer. The timing on the traffic light should be changed before there is a more serious accident.

I’m writing to ask for your assistance in dealing with this traffic issue. In addition to looking at the light, there may be other changes that could help address the traffic problem, such as having a crossing guard or restricting a left turn into or out of the school driveway.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Katrina Hooper
Student at Blake High School

Which changes should be made to establish and maintain formal writing conventions? Select two options.

Change “Thank you” to “Thanks” in the first paragraph.
Change “blocked” to “lousy” in the first paragraph.
Delete “Being late to school is a major bummer.” in the second paragraph.
Change “I’m” to “I am” in the third paragraph.
Make the final paragraph longer.

Answer:

  • Delete “Being late to school is a major bummer.” in the second paragraph.
  • Change “I’m” to “I am” in the third paragraph.

Step-by-step explanation:

The text presented is a letter to an important person who can solve the traffic problem near the school that is preventing students from arriving at school at the correct time. Because this letter is intended for an authority and the letter represents a formal request, it must be written using a formal language to convey credibility and seriousness to the reader.

Formal language is used in professional, academic or when there is no familiarity between the interlocutors, that is, in situations that require more seriousness. For this reason, it is not correct to use slang like "bummer". the slang should be replaced by more elaborate words. Also it is not correct to use abbreviations like "I'm", because it is more appropriate to use "I am".
