the word 'Australia' means southern or 'land down under'.It is the only continents which is an island, hence it is also known as an island continent.

Australia is considered a continent because it is a landmass of geologically stable continental crust, on a independent tectonic plate from other continents and has a biological distinctiveness from other landmass. Australia can also be considered an island because it is surrounded by water.
