As Renaissance Humanism emerged, the idea of each man being in control of his own destiny lead to increased interest in scientific discoveries. This differed from the fiercely fate-oriented and religious views of the Middle Ages. Scientific discoveries and a fascination with far-off lands resulted in the Age of Exploration.
