Suppose you increase your walking speed from 6 m/s to 12 m/s in a period of 1 s. What is your acceleration ?

a = acceleration = dv/dt ~ delta v/ delta t.

a = ( 12 m/s - 6 m/s ) / ( 1 s ) = 6 m/s^2

Done.
