2x = x + 4

We move all terms to the left:

2x - (x + 4) = 0

We get rid of the parentheses.

2x - x - 4 = 0

We add all the numbers and all the variables.

x - 4 = 0

We move all terms containing x to the left hand side, all other terms to the right hand sides.

x = 4
