Mussolini, as the other leaders that became dictators during this period, was promising the people certain things to convince them to have him elected, and he managed to get to office, but after he did, he quickly changed his rhetoric. Once Mussolini had the power in his hands, he showed his real face. In order to assure his position on the long run, he started persecuting, imprisoning, and eliminating the people he saw as threat to his power. He employed the military and police forces in order to control everything in the country and to use the fear factor in his advantage, quickly taking control over the whole country and establishing himself as the only authority in it.
