Given the 2 equations

x + 3y = 9 → (1)

- 2x + 2y = 6 → (2)

Multiplying (1) by 2 and adding to (2) will eliminate the x- term

2x + 6y = 18 → (3)

Add (2) and (3) term by term to eliminate x, that is

0 + 8y = 24

8y = 24 ( divide both sides by 8 )

y = 3

Substitute y = 3 into either of the 2 equations and solve for x

Substituting into (1)

x + 3(3) = 9

x + 9 = 9 ( subtract 9 from both sides )

x = 0

solution is (0, 3 )
