It was established in 1949 with it's headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The aim of the organization is for all member States to contribute towards mutual defense. In this regard, an attack one one country is seen as an attack on all NATO members.

While it was born out of the Soviet Threat, NATO has played a significant role after the end of the Cold War. It consists of a total of 29 countries in Europe and North America with the United States.
