and we start building our one unknown equation part by part by reading

"Sixteen is the same" means in math that "x ="

"one and two tenths" 1
^(2/10)

this means we have (remember how to sum fractions?)

1 + 2 / 10 = 10/10 + 2/10 = 12/10 = 6/5

so " one and two tenths times a number added to negative 8" become
(6x)/(5) + (-8)

so we have our equation

(6x)/(5) + (-8) or 16 =
(6x)/(5) - 8
