3x² - 4x + 1 = (x - 1)(3x - 1)

x² - 1 ← is a difference of squares and factors as

x² - 1 = (x - 1)(x + 1)

Expressing the product in factored form


((x-1)(3x-1))/((x-1)(x+1)) ×
(x+1)/(3x-1)

Cancel common factors on numerator/denominator, that is

Cancel (x - 1) , (x + 1) and (3x - 1), leaving the simplified form 1
