Thus the third side of the right triangle is half of x

let the third side be a then x = 2a

Applying Pythagoras' identity to the right triangle with hypotenuse 2.1 then

a² + 1.4² = 2.1²

a² + 1.96 = 4.41 ( subtract 1.96 from both sides )

a² = 2.45 ( take the square root of both sides )

Hence x = 2 ×
√(2.45) ≈ 3.1 ft
