If the Soviets were true to Karl Marx's ideas, socialism would have been implemented as belonging to the working population as a whole, without any kind of authoritarian regime. Marx preached that socilism would be a way to end class struggles, so as to disappear with classes, including the state. There would be only one class at the end of the process that would include everyone equally. On the contrary, what happened was the seizure of the means of production by the authoritarian states, which became a privileged class and that brought the population into poverty.
