3(x+2)=5(x-8) distributes out to give you

3x + 6 = 5x - 40. Get like terms together on opposite sides of the equals sign:

46 = 2x and divide to get x = 23. Now that we know that x = 23, that means that x + 2 is the same as 23 + 2 which is 25.
