If the speed of light through material Z is

2.5×108 m/s, what is this material’s index of
refraction? The speed of light in a vacuum is
3 × 108 m/s.

Answer: 1.2

Refraction consists in the bending of light or the change in its direction when passing through a medium with a refractive index
n different from the other medium.

Being its equation as follows:

n=(c)/(v)

Where
c is the speed of light in vacuum and
v its speed in the other medium.

Now, writing this equation with the known values, we will have Z's index of refraction:

n=(3(10)^(8) m/s)/(2.5(10)^(8) m/s)

n=1.2
