Which best analyzes how the bishop contributes to the plot of "The Convict and the Bishop"?

A. The bishop believes the villagers' feelings about Valjean, leading to his need to steal again; this builds the rising tension.

B. The bishop becomes angry at Valjean, leading to Valjean's eventual betrayal; this sets up the exposition of the story.
C. The bishop is foolish and allows Valjean to steal from him; this leads to the climax of the story.

D. The bishop is the first person to show Valjean mercy, ultimately leading to Valjean's inner conflict; this builds tension and leads to the climax of the story.

Hi!

So I havent read this version of the story, but I am reading the book. It is D, because the rest of the story has Valjean wondering about the bishop and leading him to turn himself in and adopting Cosette.

Hope this helps! Sorry for going on a tangent!
