Colonial maps will show many countries as colonies ruled by larger European nations (Canada will be marked as British, Brazil will be marked as Portuguese, etc).

However, independent maps will mostly show individual countries that are uniquely marked/named to differentiate them from their previous imperial “overlords”

The map that is included in this section is a modern map. It is a representation of the African continent as it looked after colonialism, and the independence movements that took place in the second half of the 20th century.

If you want to compare this type of map with one that shows the effects of colonialism, you are going to have to look at the size of the countries. Maps during colonial times are more likely to have larger territories. Moreover, borders are likely to be different. Finally, you are likely to see the name the name of countries which do not exit anymore. The maps which show the biggest move from colonialism to independence are those that display the highest number of new countries and the most change in borders.
