Which selection of the story signals a flashback?

1. With trembling hands Luca opened the old book, its dusty cover soft and fragile. He had been waiting for months for the right moment to read his great-grandfather's diary. Now that moment was here. He opened a page at random and bent close to read the fine script. On October 10, his great-grandfather had written, "Today was a day to eclipse all other days. 2. Today I finally spoke to Nadia." Luca drew in his breath. Nadia was his great-grandmother. 3. "I have waited for this moment for a very long time. I have waited since the first time I beheld her. She was leaving the classroom, laughing with her friends with neither a care in the world nor an inkling of my existence. Her eyes shone brighter than the stars that evening. But this evening was better. This evening, we spoke for a span of 10 minutes, and her laughter pealed like bells ringing. 4. Then, she said her mother was waiting and she had to return home, but she gave me her sweet smile and squeezed my hand. I know we will speak again soon." Luca looked up from the writing to the date. His great-grandfather must have been 16 when he wrote this, the same age Luca was now. Luca gave a little grimace. Unlike his great-grandfather, the great romantic, he was not planning on getting married anytime soon.

Answer:

Sentence 2: "I have waited for this moment for a very long time. I know we will speak again soon."

Step-by-step explanation: We started to see the flashback begin towards the end of 1 when the great-grandfather had written "today was a day to eclipse all other days." Sentence Two however goes into greater detail as to why the day was different from others. The great-grandfather is writing about the anticipated time of finally being able to speak to the lady he was head over heals over. It's giving a background story of where he was at, description of the younger lady, and the interactions he had with her when they spoke for 10 minutes.

Answer: section one/three

Explanation: Sections 1,2, and 4 all include Luca or his reaction to his grandfather's journal. Section three fully immerses the reader into a flashback of Luca's grandfather's life. The reader knows that section three is set in the past, but it is written in the grandfather's point of view. If the question strictly means, which section is the flashback, then it is three.

If the question asked which section sets up a flashback (signals it) then I would have to say section one. Section one establishes that Luca will be reading an excerpt from his grandfather's diary and Luca even reads the first sentence.
