A swimming pool is open for7 1/2 hours per day. the pool keeps one lifeguard on duty at a time. And each life guard's shift is 1 1/2 hours. How many shifts are there per day?

Explanation:

we know that

To find out the number of shifts per day, divide the total number of hours per day the pool is open by each lifeguard's shift.

Convert to an improper fraction first


7(1)/(2)\ h=(7*2+1)/(2)=(15)/(2)\ h


1(1)/(2)\ h=(1*2+1)/(2)=(3)/(2)\ h

so


(15/2)/(3/2)=15/3=5\ shifts
