If you do have a calculator just enter this:

3 + (-1)

I took off the p that was connected to 3 and replaced the -p to become a -1 because a regular p is equal to 1. I added parenthesis because their is a addition (+) and substration (-) next to each other, and the negative (-) sign is a part of the variable p.
