The cotton gin was an important development because it dramatically reduced the amount of time it took to separate cotton seeds from cotton fiber. This made the cotton business tremendously profitable. This was concentrated mostly in the South, and with the new invention, the South became even more reliant on plantations and slavery, and the number of slaves massively increased.
