President Thomas Jefferson hoped that the Embargo Act of 1807 would help the United States by demonstrating to Britain and France their dependence on American goods, convincing them to respect Americanneutrality and stop impressingAmerican seamen. Instead, the act had a devastating effect on Americantrade.

The embargo act was passed by President Thomas Jefferson. Since America did not want to get involved in foreign affairs after the war for independence. Both Britain and France were trying to sabotage trade for the opposing country and America was neutral in the middle. The Embargo act was bad for the US economy. It stopped external trade which led to smuggling goods to trade illegally. The value of cash crops and agricultural goods in America decreased significantly because of the high volume of farmers. This soon led to a economic depression.
