Part A: y = 3 inches

Part B: Area = 60 square inches

Explanation:

perimeter of the rectangle = 34 inches =2*(4y)+2*x

2*(4y)+2*x =34 Equation 1

perimeter of the triangle = 40 inches =5y +5y +2x

5y +5y +2x = 40 Equation 2

Using Equation 2 we have:

10y+2x = 40

2x= 40-10y

x= (40-10y)/2

We have:

x= 20-5y Equation 3

Using Equation 1

2*(4y)+2*(20-5y) =34

8y+40-10y =34

40-34=2y

6=2y so we have y=3inches

Area of the rectangle=x*4y= 5*4*(3)=60 square inches

Using x= 20-5y Equation 3

X=20-5*3=5
