The ending of the story is laced with irony due to the unsuspected resolution that comes From both of the characters Even after all their sacrifices to give gifts for each other. Also the fact they have the gifts now they can't use them. They are both thankful fro what they got on Christmas. The point of the story is not about Material sacrifices but strong deep Spiritual sacrifices Which is from them loving each other.
