We can not combine like terms because this is not multiplication, but we can factor using the lowest exponent. Divide by
a^2 on both numbers.

We can rewrite this as:


a^2(a+1)

We can check by expanding it.

a^2*a?
a^3

What is
a^2*1?
a^2

If we add up the expanded form, we would get
a^3+a^2
