Explanation:

(1) x + 8y = 76

(2) 8x + 8y = 104

7x = 28 Subtracted (1) from (2)

(3) x = 4 Divided each side by 7

4 + 8y = 76 Substituted (3) into (1)

8y = 72 Subtracted 32 from each side

y = 9 Divided each side by 8

The solution is x = 4, y = 9
