(a + b) (a-b) = a ^2 -b ^ 2

In this problem we have the following equation


x ^ 2 -64 = 0

This we can write it in the following way


x ^ 2 - 8 ^ 2 = 0

Then if a = x and b = 8 then:


x ^ 2 - 8 ^ 2 = (x+8)(x-8) = 0

Then the product of both factors is equal to zero when:


x+8 = 0\\\\x =-8

Or


x -8 = 0\\\\x =8
