Then if a = x and b = 8 then:

`x ^ 2 - 8 ^ 2 = (x+8)(x-8) = 0`

Then the product of both factors is equal to zero when:

`x+8 = 0\\\\x =-8`

`x -8 = 0\\\\x =8`
