PLZ HELP ......... The length of a rectangle is shown below: On a coordinate grid from negative 6 to positive 6 on the x-axis and on the y-axis, two points A and B are shown. The point A is on ordered pair 1, 3, and the point B is on ordered pair negative 1, 3. A straight line joins the points A and B. If the area of the rectangle to be drawn is 10 square units, where should points C and D be located, if they lie vertically below the line that connects B and A, to make this rectangle? (5 points) C(−1, 1), D(1, 1) C(−1, −2), D(1, −2) C(−1, 5), D(1, 5) C(−1, −7), D(1, −7)

Answer:

The point C is (-1 , -2) and point D is (1 , -2)

Explanation:

* Lets study the information in the problem

- ABCD is a rectangle

# AB = CD , BC = AD

# m∠A = m∠B = m∠C = m∠D = 90°

- Point A is (1 , 3)

- Point B is (-1 , 3)

* That means AB is a horizontal segment because A and B have

the same y-coordinates

- The length of AB = 1 - -1 = 2

- The area of the rectangle is 10 units²

∵ The area of the rectangle = L × w

∵ AB is the width and = 2 units

∴ L = 10 ÷ 2 = 5 units

- Point C lies vertically below point B by 5 units

- Point C has the same x-coordinate of point B

∴ Point C is (-1 , 3 - 5) = (-1 , -2)

- Point D lies vertically below point A by 5 units

- Point D has the same x-coordinate of point A

∴ Point C is (1 , 3 - 5) = (1 , -2)

* The point C is (-1 , -2) and point D is (1 , -2)
