I will pick the conflict between Cuba and the United States, in particular the Bay of Pigs invasion. The letters will be from president John F. Kennedy and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
Kennedy:
Dear editor,
I want to explain to you how the Bay of Pigs invasion occured. President Eisenhower had designed a plan, which I then approved, that involved a military invasion of Cuba. We were meant to arrive at the Bay of Pigs with a military group made of Cuban refugees and CIA personnel. Our reason for conducting this was a desire to control the influence of communism in America. We believe that the leadership of Castro is a threat to democracy and liberty in the continent. However, the invasion was catastrophic. I realized that the actions were unpopular, and I decided against further attacks and collaboration. As a result, our troops were defeated after only three days.
Castro:
Dear editor,
I am writing to inform you of the events that took place in Playa Giron, in the Bay of Pigs. The CIA launched an attack on Cuba in an attempt to violate our sovereignty and overtake our government. This is an offense we cannot tolerate. The revolution was succesful, and we look now towards a promising future. But this cannot be achieved if we do not deal with outside threats. Therefore, we fought bravely, and we were able to defeat the invaders after three days. This has led to the worsening of the relationship between Cuba and the United States, but the strenghtening of our country.
