Answer:

For every minute, four dots will be added to the pattern.

Formula: t = 4m + 1

Explanation:

Note the amount at the start. It is 1 dot.

Note the amount after one minute, it is 5 dots in total. There is an addition of 4 dots (1 + 4) = 5.

Note the amount after two minutes, it is 9 dots in total. There is another addition of 4 dots (5 + 4) = 9

Create a formula. Let total = t, and minutes = m.

It is already given that you are given 4 dots per minute (as we have solved for it). You start out with 1 dot. Set the equation.

total = (dots per minute)(minutes) + (starting amount)

total = t

dots per minute = 4

minutes = m

starting amount = 1

Plug in the corresponding number & variables to the corresponding words.

(t) = (4)(m) + (1)

t = 4m + 1

t = 4m + 1 is your formula.

Check. Plug in 0 into the formula.

0 minute:

t = 4(0) + 1

t = 0 + 1

t = 1 (as shown on the left).

1 minute:

t = 4(1) + 1

t = 4 + 1

t = 5 (as shown in the middle).

2 minute:

t = 4(2) + 1

t = 8 + 1

t = 9 (as shown on the right).
