A can is 4 inches wide and 8 inches tall. To the nearest whole number, what is the area of a label that wraps around the can if the label is 3 inches shorter than the height of the can? Use 3.14 for pi.

we know that

The lateral area of a cylinder (label of the can) is equal to


LA=2\pi rh

we have that

A can is 4 inches wide

so

The diameter of the can is 4 inches


r=4/2=2\ in ----> the radius is half the diameter


h=8-3=5\ in ----> height of the label

substitute in the formula


LA=2(3.14)(2)(5)=62.8\ in^(2)
