Explanation:

say the bar has 20 pieces. he has 10 pieces. and he gave away 1/4 of those 10

1/4 x 10 = 2.5

20 / 2.5 = 8

So his friend recieved 1/8

you could also just do 1/2 x 1/4 which is 1/8
