once a population is introduced to a new environment, they can only learn to adapt and allow mutations to help them develop new traits or die off. the organisms that are not fit for survival will die off leaving those fit for survival to reproduce and their offspring will inherit the same "fit" genes and be able to survive long enough to reproduce offspring that have the traits fit for survival and so on (the cycle continues with mutations to help develop even more fit genes)
