Before mitosis (cell division) DNA (chromosomes) must be replicated (during the S phase of interphase) so that each daughter cell receive a complete copy of the DNA. As a result of DNA replication, the two identical chromosomes will be formed and they are called sister chromatids. Two sister chromatides are joined to the original chromosome by a single centromere.

During the anaphase of mitosis, these chromatids will separate longitudinally to become individual chromosomes.
