the sum of complementary angles is always 90°.

If we know one of these angles, we can set up an equation –


\triangleright\sf{y+48=90}

and then solve for y...


\triangleright \ \sf{y=42}

y = 42 and/or x = 36

Explanation:

y + 48 = 90
y = 42 (subtracted 48 from 90)

3x + 2x = 180 (angles are linear pairs)
5x = 180 (combine like terms)
x = 36 (divided by 5 on both sides)
