By using the Pythagorean Theorem we can find the side of one triangle and use that to find the area of the whole rectangle..

So we know that leg 1 is 8 and the hypotenuse is 10 so in order to find leg 2 we need to use
b=√(c^2-a^2)....Where b is the side we are trying to find

So by plugging in 10 for c and 8 for a because c is the hypotenuse and a is leg 1 we get..


b=√(10^2-8^2)

Now you do the math


b=√(100-64) \\b=√(36) \\b=6

Now with that information, you know that leg 2 or the shorter side is 6 inches

So, you add 8 and 8 because the height together is 16 then you multiply by 6 and you get 96 for the area of the entire rectangle
