After breaking away from the Catholic Church, Henry VIII formed the protestant religion and in England there has been protestant and Catholic rivalry ever since. Martin Luther started a reformation in 1517.

They were at rivalry, especially when the rulers of England changed from protestant to catholic ever so often

Over the centuries there had been many reform efforts within the Catholic Church, The term Protestant was not initially applied to the reformers, but later was used to describe all groups protesting Roman Catholic orthodoxy.
