Why did stimson think the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagaski was a terrile thing to do but better than any alternative

Because an infantry invasion of Japan, would have resulted in Far more casualties for both the americans and the japanese. Than the dropping of an atomic bomb.
