y=-5x-8...(1)

and


y=4x+1...(2)

Let us equate the two equations to get;


4x+1=-5x-8

Group similar terms;


4x+5x=-8-1

Simplify;


9x=-9

Divide both sides by 9.


x=-1

Put x=-1, into any of the equations, say (2);


y=4(-1)+1


y=-4+1


y=-3

The solution is;

(-1,-3)
