You set them equal to each other since they are proprtional

So 12-x=x

Add x on both sides

12=2x

Divide by 2 on both sides

6=X

Answer: x = 4

Explanation:

Since the two triangles are similar, you can set up a proportion:

(16)/(12-x)=(8)/(x)\\\\\\\text{Cross Multiply and solve for x:}\\16(x)=8(12-x)\\16x=96-8x\\24x=96\\\boxed{x=4}
