19 1/2 and 24 1/2
x + 5 = y
x + y = 44
Substitute x + 5 for y.
x + x + 5 = 44
2x + 5 = 44
Subtract 5 from both sides.
2x = 39
Divide both sides by 2.
x = 19 1/2
Now, substitute 19 1/2 in for x.
19 1/2 + 5 = y
24 1/2 = y
