The discrimination of a function determines what type of answers you will get.
If the discriminant is greater than 0(positive) than you will get 2 real numbers(2 x-intercepts).
If the discriminant is 0 than you will get 1 real number(1 x-intercept).
If the discriminant is less than 0(negative) than you will get no real numbers(0 x-intercept) and 2 imaginary/complex numbers.
