The first side of a triangle is 3 inches shorter than the second side, and 2 inches longer than the third side. How long is each side, if the triangle has a perimeter of 28 inches?

1st side = x - 3

2nd side = x

3rd side = x - 1

Form an equation:

x - 3 + x + x - 5 = 28

Simplify:

3x - 8 = 28

Add 8 to both sides:

3x = 36

Divide both sides by 3:

x = 12

first length = 12 - 3 = 9 inches

second length = 12 inches

third length = 12 - 5 = 7 inches
